2016 AFATIC Reunion -- San Francisco, CA

The next reunion is planned for 13-16 Sept. 2016

Our host, Jerry Hensel, has selected the Embassy Suites in Burlingame, CA for our hotel which is only a 10-15 minute ride from the SF Airport. Jerry has arranged a discount group rate of $229 per night. You can see the hotel website and its features here.

HOTEL RESERVATIONS
There is a block of 20 rooms reserved for us at our group rate until August 23, 2016 [NOTE NEW DEADLINE]. After that deadline, the rooms will be given to the public. The reunion dates for which the discount applies are Sept. 13-16. In addition, you may reserve up to five days before and/or after the reunion at the same discount rate.
Our unique "group code" is AFA. You can reserve either by phone or online.
By phone, call 800-EMBASSY (800-362-2779) and request reservation by group code AFA.
Online, go to www.sfoburlingame.embassysuites.com and put in your dates. Then, be sure to click on the small blue link at the bottom left that says "Add Special Rate Code". A list of discount opportunities will appear and in the "Group Code" box, type in AFA. Then click "Check rooms and rates" to see our discount rate and to make the actual reservation.

ITINERARY

Tuesday 9/13, we'll all meet at the hotel Tap & Tavern at starting at 4:00 PM. See Jerry for your tote bag and to pay for events and the bus. He prefers a check for the payment. We'll renew old friendships and find a bite of dinner together or on your own.

Wednesday 9/14, we'll board the bus at 10:00 AM and enjoy commentary as we travel to the Golden Gate gift store. Then it's over the Golden Gate Bridge. We'll stop at the north side at Vista Point for photos.
Then on to lunch in the City of Napa at the Gott Roadside restaurant. We'll continue to the Castle of Love, which in Italian is Castello di Amorosa. [$60.00 per person] There we'll have a walking tour of the Castle, to see its four stories underground and four stories above. It has a real torture chamber shipped in from Italy with all the stones of the castle. Then a wine and cheese tasting at the Castle. Non-alcoholic grape juice will also be available. [Tour and tasting is $60.00 per person]
Our return to the hotel will be via the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge. The evening meal will be either at the hotel's Tap & Tavern or a 1200 foot walk to Kinkaid's restaurant.

Thursday 9/15, we will board the bus at 10:00 AM. We'll possibly take a trip up Twin Peaks for a view down on San Franciso. Then it's on to a docent tour of the Boudin Bread Factory at 11:30. In 1849, it started the sourdough bread during the gold rush on the Embarcadero. The bakery is still using the same starter yeast-bacteria culture it started in 1849. [Tour is $5.00 per person]
Lunch and shopping will be on your own as you stroll the San Francisco wharf area. Then we will gather at 5:15 PM at Pier 43 1/2 for a Red and White Fleet "California Sunset Cruise" around the SF Bay past Alcatraz, Tiburon, Angel Island, Sausalito and the Golden Gate Bridge. A hearty appetizer buffet will be included with music and beverage. [Discount rate for the cruise is $58.00 per person.]
We'll return to the hotel for the evening meal at Tap & Tavern or a walk to Kinkaid's.

Friday 9/16, we will board the bus at 8:00 AM. We'll bus to a briefing/tour of the NASA AMES Research Center at Moffett Field. Yes, the Moffett Field with the huge dirigible hangar. All will have to be photographed and badged at the Pass & ID Office prior to entry.
After the briefing and tour, we'll lunch at the cafeteria. It's right next to the NASA gift shop. Then we'll board the bus for a short ride to the Computer HIstory Museum for a docent-led tour at 2:00 PM. [$16.00 per person.]
We'll return to the hotel. The day will conclude with our 6:00 PM Farewell Dinner, which will be at Kinkaid's restaurant. [Dinner is $70.00 per person.]
Please note -- the dress for dinner will be coat and tie for men.

Jerry has arranged for a dedicated bus for our three days. The cost will run about $125 per person, depending on how many attendees there are. The cost includes bridge tolls, overtime, and parking fees. Jackie and Jerry have enjoyed several tours with Rosie's bus company before.
